Congratulations on your engagement! An engagement photo session is a great way to capture this special moment in your lives. I don't believe couples need to wait for their wedding to have romantic, beautiful photos taken (Hell, I don't think you need to be engaged either, you want some photos to express your love? Go for it!). You may have questions though. Here are 10 tips for engagement photos to help you get ready for your session:
10 tips for your engagement photo session
Make a day out of this: Don't just look at your watch a half hour before the session begins while sitting on your couch, wearing pajamas, and say "Alright, time to get ready." Spend the day together. Connect with each other. Take the time to tell one another why they're so important to you and why these photos matter to you. Maybe even write it down and wait to tell each other during the session! Plan a romantic dinner afterwards. Make this just one aspect of a big date.
Coordinate your outfits: Pick outfits that complement each other and the location you've chosen. Consider color palettes, textures, and patterns that work well together. But I can't stress enough to wear clothes that you are comfortable with and that are authentically you. You don't want to be uncomfortable during your session or have photos of you wearing something that you would never wear unless your life depended on it.
Get a fresh haircut: Book a haircut AT LEAST A WEEK BEFORE your photo session to give your hair time to settle in. Notice the emphasis on "at least a week before"? Too many times, folks will think getting a haircut the day before or even the day of their session is a good idea but, trust me, it won't look quite right.
Get your nails done: You'll likely be showing off your engagement ring, so make sure your nails look good too. Consider getting a manicure or doing your nails yourself. If you're wondering if getting this done on the day of is also a bad idea, don't worry, that's fine.
Hydrate and moisturize: Drink plenty of water and moisturize your skin in the days leading up to your photo session to ensure a healthy, glowing complexion.
Think about what you want from your session: Come up with some ideas of your own. Is there a certain photo you saw on Instagram or Pinterest that you're dying to replicate? Or a pose that you thought of that you'd like to do? Talk with your photographer and collaborate.
Bring props: If you have any props that represent your relationship or personalities, bring them along for your photo session. This could be something like a favorite book, board game, or musical instrument.
Be yourselves: Much like I stressed wearing clothing that were authentically you, I also want YOU to be authentic. If you're a goofy couple, be goofy. If you're very affectionate, be affectionate. I will guide you through the session with poses and whatnot but I also want you to shine through on each photo.
Be flexible: Be prepared to go with the flow on the day of your photo session. If the weather doesn't cooperate or if there are unexpected changes, stay calm and flexible.
Have fun!: Remember that the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy this special moment with your partner. Let your love and connection shine through in your photos!
