Fun idea for family photos with your dog

Family photos are cherished snapshots frozen in time, capturing moments of joy, love, and togetherness. But what happens when you add a furry, four-legged member to the frame? Suddenly, the dynamics shift, and the result is a blend of laughter, unpredictability, and undeniable warmth.

Humans and dogs catching treats

Your dog is part of the family

Having a pet, whether it's a dog, cat, or even a turtle, means that your family extends beyond just humans to include the furry or scaly member. When clients select me as their Phoenix family photographer, one of my initial inquiries is, "Do you have any pets?" If the response is affirmative, I strongly recommend their inclusion. This decision will bring you gratitude for years to come.

Benefits of family photos with your dog

There are numerous advantages to having a photo shoot with your dog. The most evident one is the creation of lasting, beautiful photographs. In addition to this, there are less apparent benefits such as keeping children entertained and engaged. Children can easily lose interest, especially during a photo session. While I have various techniques to maintain their focus, having their pet present can naturally help in keeping them engaged.

Also, by including your pets in your family photos, you can create opportunities for unexpected and spontaneous moments. Rather than focusing on the potential challenges they may pose during a photo shoot, consider the positive aspects and the unique moments that may arise.

Dogs catching treats

Photos of dogs catching treats are a must-have in the collection of any dog photographer. These photos depict a comical scene with the dog's unwavering concentration and drool in mid-air. Your dog will love them too, perhaps not for the same reason as us, they simply revel in the abundance of treats they will undoubtedly receive. However, why should dogs have all the fun? Just like them, we humans also delight in treats, don't we? Hence, I believe it's a fantastic concept to create a family photo series not only featuring your dog but the entire family catching treats together.

What is necessary to capture photos like this?

There are essential elements needed to capture great treat catching photos. Most of which would be provided by your Phoenix family photographer.

Treats... A lot of treats

Capturing the ideal moment when the treat is in mid-air heading towards its target may require a few attempts. However, this just gives everyone a reason to enjoy their preferred treat even more.

A controlled environment

Although it is technically feasible to take photos like this outdoors, they are most suitable for indoor settings. This could be an actual studio, your living room, garage, or any other indoor location where available light can be effectively controlled.

Off camera flashes

The responsibility for this lies entirely with the photographer. Capturing fast motion like this is nearly impossible without off-camera flashes. Not every photographer owns flash units, however. If you desire photos like this, make sure to discuss it with your family photographer to confirm they can meet your needs. I, myself, own five flash units.

A backdrop

If you want these photos to really pop and stand out, you'll want to do them in front of a backdrop. Otherwise, your background can be distracting. This, too, completely falls under the jurisdiction of your family photographer to provide. Much like off-camera flashes, not every photographer has backdrops so please also discuss this with your photographer so proper expectations can be set and met. I personally own four backdrops in various colors; blue, red, orange and gray.

Desire for a fun time

It is crucial. The images and video displayed above feature me, my girlfriend, and our dog Jaxxon. We had a great time throwing gummy bears at each other, enjoying the challenge of catching them, and, as usual, our dog looked adorable trying to catch his little meat stix.
